KENYATTA UNIVERSITY TO HOST THE 10TH ALL AFRICA UNIVERSITY GAMES 2020

Nairobi, February 6th, 2020…The Vice-Chancellor of Kenyatta University, Prof. Paul K. Wainaina has today officially launched the preparations for hosting the 10th All Africa University Games 2020 to be held at Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya by commissioning the Local Organising Committee (LOC), unveiling the Games logo and online registration portal. Participants are expected to arrive on 16thAugust 2020, compete from 17th – 21st August 2020 and depart on 22nd August 2020. A Pre-Games Scientific conference and Heads of Delegation meeting is also scheduled to take place in July 2019 at Kenyatta University.

About 4000 participants are expected to represent their respective universities across the African continent in the five day competition program consisting of 15 games that include Athletics, Chess, Swimming, Taekwondo, 3x3 Basketball, Badminton, Table Tennis, Tennis, Woodball, Billiard and Snooker, Karate, Basketball, Football, Volleyball, Handball, Rugby 7’s, Netball. Three extra games (Rollball, Snooker and Woodball) shall be played for demonstration purposes.

This will be the 3rd time for Kenya to host the events, commonly known as the FASU Games, having hosted the 2nd FASU Games in 1978 and the 7th FASU Games in 2014 both at the University of Nairobi. The Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) is a continental affiliate of the International University Sports (FISU) and a member of the Association of African Sports Confederation, with the mandate to oversee and organise continental university sports activities in Africa.

Prof. Wainaina thanked FASU for entrusting the University with the games and urged the LOC to deliver the games at a standard that reflects Kenyatta University’s track record of excellence. He was also confident that Kenyatta University teams shall put up a great display, based on their past performance record in the region.

Speaking at the launch, Ms. Peninnah Kabenge Aligawesa the FASU Secretary General highlighted the opportunities that await participants including qualifying to represent Africa in the paid World Universities’ Leagues for 3x3 Basketball 2020 and Soccer 2021, and the lasting legacy the games bestow on the host university and country.

The LOC is chaired by Prof. Godfrey Mse the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Finance and Development), with a membership representative of various top management sections and other key stakeholders. The event was also attended by the Chairman of the Kenya National Sports Council, Mr. Nderitu Gikaria.
