The event showcased a diverse representation of nurses advocating for improved working conditions. As the host institution, the Vice-Chancellor expressed gratitude to the NNAK for choosing Kenyatta University as the venue. She emphasised the University's commitment to not only academic excellence but also to supporting extracurricular activities and nurturing diverse talents. She pointed out the recent achievement of law student Samson Ajuka, who won a silver medal at the Paralympics in France. This amplifies that commitment.
Prof. Waceke Wanjohi also noted that Kenyatta University aims to become a centre of excellence in healthcare education, reporting that the nursing programme has been accredited by the Nursing Council of Kenya and will launch a PhD programme in nursing, effective January 2025. The University has seen a surge in interest in its nursing programme, receiving over 600 applications this year, though only 200 students could be accommodated due to the competitive process and limited facilities. The programme welcomes both local and international students, providing them with practical skills through collaboration with industry.
The Corporate Affairs section, part of the Vice-Chancellor's Office, is dedicated to aligning the leadership team and the entire organisation with its messages and actions across all stakeholders. Additionally, the University is committed to enhancing the healthcare system through partnerships with organisations like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the USAID HERO project, which aim to improve health outcomes in the country.
Launch of the Kenya Nursing Journal
The conference concluded with an awards ceremony recognising outstanding achievements by various nurses. This gathering not only highlighted the vital role of nursing in the healthcare system but also reinforced the importance of collaboration and continuous improvement within the profession. As Kenyatta University serves a living proof of its mission by continuing to support and foster talent in healthcare, it remains committed to empowering the next generation of nursing professionals, ensuring they are well-equipped to address the challenges of tomorrow.
